The home is a 1985 soft contemporary Joseph Vono design. The project involved the remodel of the guest bath. The layout and function of this small guest bath worked well, but the homeowner wanted a style update of the surfaces and fixtures. |

Our solution was beautiful, practical and environmentally sensitive. The bathroom is updated with modern materials: the naturally rich visual colors and textures of Kirei board, bamboo, and “Mocha” marble rest comfortably within the soft contemporary home. Together with the dappled “Baguette” Richlite counter and creamy wall paint, these finishes radiate a warmth absent in the original bath. The contrasting shine of polished chrome faucetry, cabinet pulls, and Monorail lighting fixtures is softened by their gently curving forms.
The materials were not inexpensive, so the impact on the budget was minimized by reusing much of the existing bath. We salvaged the existing vanity by refacing it with Kirei board doors and drawer fronts. It was topped with a new countertop of Richlite (made of recycled paper). The shower also remains, overlaid with seamless thin marble sheets. We did not disturb the existing wall mirror, working outside of its metal border trim. Engineered bamboo was installed over the pre-existing tile floor. All wood base trim and casing were refurbished and reused. |

The materials and methods above also illustrate the sustainable practices of minimizing demolition, minimizing waste, and making use of natural/recycled/energy-efficient materials. Additionally, all paint and wood finishes were specified to be low VOC product, and the new toilet and showerhead conserve water over the old ones. While not a “certified green” project, this remodel is a step in the right direction for this client. |

The homeowner enjoys new ideas but tends to be practical, so she was looking for an “attentive” remodeler to present her with a practical solution for this bathroom, to get the most value from her budget. She also wanted someone who was open to her interest in trying to remodel in a “green” direction, again within her budget. |
