This couple needed to transform their 26-year-old house into a home appropriate to their lifestyle. The main level rooms were connected by a long dark central hallway that congested traffic flow and wasted space. |

We used a mix of materials in neutral tones and interesting textures for the kitchen to provide a background for the colorful furnishings. Traditional cabinets in both ivory painted wood and richly stained maple incorporate details such as turned columns, arched valances, carved corbels, and stacked crown moldings. An intricate custom backsplash design of creamy tumbled marble and hand-made ceramic tiles provides a contrast to Persian Brown granite countertops and a black/gold flecked engineered stone tabletop. New oak hardwood flooring and rich gold wall paint throughout are unifying elements. |

For the layout of the new entertainment kitchen, we raised the floor of the sunken fireplace area to bring all the floors to the same level, and tore down walls to eliminate the central hall and open the kitchen to the living areas. The dining walls partly remain to formally separate that space; however, four open niches in one wall hold the clients’ antique painted windows in suspension, and a two-sided pass-through buffet opens the adjacent wall. The result is a large open main level space flooded with natural light, ideal for entertaining. |

Top-of-the line appliances service the family gourmand. The sinks are European-style square-edge stainless steel with black faucetry, including a pot filler at the range. The reworked fireplace incorporates wood panels and accommodates a flat screen television, and new cabinet drawers designed within the raised hearth house A/V equipment. We also incorporated a new lighting plan. |

The Kitchen had become the center of activity, but was ill equipped to handle the functions demanded of it. They loved their colorful Country French décor but needed help selecting finishes to freshen the look yet compliment their antiques. Inspired by their son, a James Beard Award winner, they wanted more of a showplace gourmet kitchen. |
